Jennifer Jo is an award-winning flutist and educator. An active orchestral and chamber musician, she is principal flutist of the Civic Orchestra of Los Angeles under Anthony Parnther. She has performed with the LA Philharmonic under Gustavo Dudamel, Pacific Symphony, Modesto Symphony, American Youth Symphony, Festival Napa Valley, New York Flutists, and the Talis Festival, taking her to concert halls across the U.S., as well as Canada, France, Norway and Switzerland. As a concerto soloist, she has appeared with the Orchestra Santa Monica, the Southern California Philharmonic, and the Carnegie Mellon University Wind Ensemble. She also records for film and television, both in studios and remotely.
Jo has won first prizes in many prestigious competitions, including the San Francisco Flute Society Competition, South Carolina Flute Society Competition, Southern California Philharmonic Concerto Competition, Carnegie Mellon University School of Music Concerto Competition, and the Sacramento Flute Club Competition. She was also awarded second prizes in the National Flute Association Piccolo Competition and the Berkeley Piano Club Winds and Brass Competition, in addition to top prizes at the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition, Florida Flute Association Young Artist Competition, New Jersey Flute Society Young Artist Competition, National Young Arts Competition, and the Redlands Bowl Concerto Competition.
Her doctoral dissertation, which explores the influence of traditional East Asian bamboo flutes on contemporary flute repertoire, was awarded as the winner of the 2025 National Flute Association Research Competition and has been presented at international conferences, including the NFA Convention in Atlanta, UCLA’s Global Conference on Intersections of Western and Asian Music, and the Ewha Women’s University’s Conference at UCLA.
Jo earned both her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in flute performance from UCLA, where she served as a teaching assistant for woodwind chamber music and art of listening courses. At UCLA, she was a Gluck Fellow, presenting chamber music outreach concerts across Los Angeles, and a Music Partnership Program Fellow, providing lessons at the Boys and Girls Club of Hollywood. Jo also served as administrative manager of the program, helping establish tuition-free music programs in schools throughout Los Angeles. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in flute performance with a minor in psychology from Carnegie Mellon University, where she graduated with University and College Honors and was awarded the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honors Award upon graduation.
Dedicated to teaching, Jo is also on the applied music faculty at Cuesta College and the California Summer School for the Arts at CalArts, and maintains a thriving private studio in Los Angeles. Her students have won top prizes at national and international competitions, earned Principal Chairs in the California All-State Wind Symphony and All-Southern California Honor ensembles, and been admitted to leading college music programs across the country.
Jo is a Young Artist for her esteemed flute maker, Haynes Flutes, and performs on a custom 14k-gold Haynes flute.
