Cal Poly Symphony Fall Concert featuring the Amelia Piano Trio
3 p.m., Cohan Center
The Cal Poly Symphony begins its new season with a new collaboration and new music! The Amelia Piano Trio, known nationally for its championing of new music and its energetic work with young musicians, will give the West Coast premiere of Daron Hagen’s “Orpheus and Eurydice: Concerto for Violin, Cello, Piano and Orchestra.” Called “remarkable” by String Magazine and “exemplary” by Strad, the trio’s short history includes performances from Carnegie Hall to Seattle’s Meany Hall, and tours of Central Asia with Yo Yo Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble. Composer Daron Hagen’s premiere with the Philadelphia Orchestra made him the youngest composer since Samuel Barber to work with that prestigious orchestra. The Washington Post sums it up: “A composer who can crystallize a moment in musical magic is a rarity. Expect to hear more of Hagen.”
The Symphony will also perform Beethoven’s powerful Fifth Symphony.

8 p.m., Cohan Center
Come celebrate spring with Cal Poly’s Combined Choirs (PolyPhonics and The University Singers) and Symphony! Carl Orff’s masterpiece brings irreverent, bawdy and tender poetry from the Middle Ages to life. Between the well-known bookends, “O Fortuna,” this 20th-century tour de force surveys the themes of Springtime (“Primo vere”), the Tavern (“In Taberna”) and the Court of Love (“Cour d’amours”). As spring arrives for us again this year, these timeless songs speak to our joys and fears as freshly as when Orff set them to music.
