By Director of Bands Andrew McMahan
The Spring Concert of Cal Poly's Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble will be a celebration of four anniversaries: 100 years of band at Cal Poly, 50 years of collaboration with director of bands emeritus William V. Johnson, 20 years since the opening of the Performing Arts Center, and 10 years with Christopher J. Woodruff as the associate director of bands and director of the Mustang Marching Band.
The concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2016. I would like to extend a special invitation for alumni to attend. Additionally, I would like to encourage anyone who participated in a Cal Poly concert band to perform as a part of a special Alumni Concert Band that afternoon.
The Alumni Concert Band will only have one rehearsal: at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4, in Room 216 of the Davidson Music Center (No. 45). The ensemble will likely perform three selections, with William V. Johnson, Christopher J. Woodruff and myself as the conductors. The repertoire will be selected in consideration of time and accessibility for all players. Sheet music will be sent to all players a month in advance so that everyone can be prepared by the June 4 rehearsal.
All band alumni, regardless of whether you performed in a concert band at
Cal Poly, are encouraged to attend and participate! However, if you feel as though it's been too long since you played your instrument, you are still welcome to attend the concert, participate in any social activities, and be recognized. The current students and directors really want this to be a June Homecoming — so we hope to see as many band alumni as possible!
Visit the secure online Alumni Interest Form to let us know if you are interested in this once-in-a-lifetime celebration. Submission of the form does not indicate a commitment. Please provide your input by April 15.
