Jazz Federation Announces Young Jazz Scholarship Winners
Pat Bang
Daniel Henry
Music major Patrick Bang (bass) and fellow University Jazz Band member Daniel Henry (saxophone) were recently awarded Young Jazz Scholarships by the Jazz Federation of San Luis Obispo County. Two Cuesta College students, Emma Reynolds (voice) and Keegan Harshman (bass), were also awarded scholarships. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of a live audition. The audition was judged by a panel of respected jazz musicians and educators: Ryan Garcia, Clint Iwanicha, and Bruce Knowlton.
Each winner received $200 and performed with an all-pro rhythm section on March 8, 2012, at Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo. As the best jazz musician among all the winners, Patrick Bang was instead awarded the $500 Matt Taylor Scholarship. This scholarship was named for an excellent and very popular local musician who passed away several years ago. All the Young Jazz Scholarships are generously funded by Matt's father, George Taylor.
The Jazz Federation of SLO County is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote jazz and jazz education throughout the county.
