Mission, Goals and Outcomes

Mission Statement:

The Music Department offers a program that develops musical skills and sensitivity, encourages creativity, and cultivates vision for the future. A graduate of this program will be prepared to begin specialized study at the graduate level and to enter a wide variety of professional careers.

Statement of Goals:

In support of the mission, the Music Department at Cal Poly:

  1. introduces students to the role of music in the human experience;
  2. helps form personal goals;
  3. develops the discipline, skills, and knowledge to help achieve those goals;
  4. serves as a valuable resource for the non-major;
  5. serves as a cultural center for both the university and the community.

Outcomes:

As a result of Goal 1 (to introduce students to the role of music in the human experience):

  1. Students understand music in historical, geographical, and cultural contexts.
  2. Students understand the applications of technology to their musical activities.

As a result of Goal 2 (to help form personal goals):

  1. Through consultation, music majors develop and complete individualized senior projects.
  2. Students engage in a variety of curricular and co-curricular activities.

As a result of Goal 3 (to develop the discipline, skills, and knowledge to help achieve those goals):

  1. Students demonstrate competence in theory, musicology, musicianship, technology, and performance.
  2. Students communicate effectively.

As a result of Goal 4 (to serve as a valuable resource for the non-music major):

  1. Non-music majors participate in a wide range of performing ensembles.
  2. Non-music majors enrich their educational experience through the exploration of the discipline of music.
  3. Non-music majors may achieve depth of understanding and competence through a music minor curriculum.

As a result of Goal 5 (to serve as a cultural center for both the university and the community):

  1. Audience members from the university and community attend clinics, workshops, concerts, and lectures by students and faculty.
  2. Audience members from the university and community attend clinics, workshops, concerts, and lectures by outstanding individuals and groups from outside the University.

Program Learning Objectives

  • Understand the role of music in today's diverse world
  • Understand the applications of technology to musical activities
  • Form personal goals in the field of music and complete a capstone project related to those goals
  • Demonstrate understanding of music theory within a cultural context
  • Demonstrate understanding of music history within a cultural context
  • Demonstrate competence in musical performance within a cultural context
