PolyPhonics and Arab Music Ensemble to Perform at Carnegie Hall
Two of the Music Department’s major ensembles are teaming up for a trip to Carnegie Hall in the spring. PolyPhonics, Cal Poly’s premier chamber choral ensemble, and the Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble have been invited to give the showcase performance at the World Projects 2014 New York Choral Festival to be held March 16-18 at this most prestigious concert venue. High school choirs from around the U.S., including Puerto Rico, will also be performing. Professor Thomas Davies, who conducts PolyPhonics, will be a festival faculty clinician and adjudicator for several of the high school performances.
In addition to the Carnegie Hall performance, PolyPhonics and the Arab Music Ensemble, conducted by Associate Professor Ken Habib, will perform a concert and give a lecture-demonstration at the CUNY Graduate Center on March 17. The Graduate Center combines rigorous academic training in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences with globally significant research. It is home to the Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center, and it is the principal doctorate-granting institution of the City University of New York.
Wrapping up the tour, the ensembles will give a performance on March 20 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in the heart of Philadelphia’s Historic District. This joint showing will be the third such collaboration between PolyPhonics and the Arab Music Ensemble, their previous performances in the winters of 2007 and 2011 paving the way for the upcoming tour.
