Cal Poly Faculty, Students and Alumni Vital to San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra

Almost 10 years ago, the San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra became an independent, non-profit musical organization with the purpose of performing the finest works written for the wind band at the highest possible artistic level. The ensemble also strives to foster a better appreciation of the wind ensemble repertoire and make an important contribution to the cultural vitality of the Central Coast community. The ensemble performs a series of five concerts annually throughout the Central Coast area. On a more international note last August 10-21 the orchestra participated in the Jeju International Music Festival in South Korea, performing concerts on Jeju Island and in the city of Seoul.

Three Cal Poly faculty members perform with the orchestra. They include Director of Bands William Johnson who also serves as the orchestra's musical director, and Associate Director of Bands Christopher Woodruff who also serves as a guest conductor. David Rackley, former Mustang Band director, also serves as a guest conductor. All three perform in the orchestra when not conducting. Keith Waibel, Cal Poly's clarinet instructor, plays bass clarinet in the ensemble.

Several Cal Poly Band alumni perform in the orchestra, Shannon McNeely, clarinet; Ted Hamm, trumpet; Elizabeth Ketterer-Kawamoto, bassoon; Luke Soules, clarinet and saxophone; Chris Hoffmeyer, bass clarinet; Mike Burrell, horn; Len Kawamoto, horn; April Souther, horn; Amy Schultz, flute; Steve Vines, trumpet; and Laura Sorvetti, trombone.

Several Cal Poly students perform regularly with the orchestra. They include Sabrina Glenn, Cory Hacket-Robles, Leigh Finley and Jon Withem. Students often serve as substitutes for various members who must miss rehearsals or performances.
