Band Fraternity Receives National Award

Members of Kappa Kapp PsiThe national honorary band fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi has designated Cal Poly's chapter as a 2009-11 Kappa Kappa Psi Leadership Award recipient.

The honor was given to 18 chapters across the country, including UCLA, the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Georgia. Each chapter is acknowledged as having maintained an extraordinary level of commitment to their band programs and to the purposes and values of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Representatives will be invited to present their work at the national convention in Colorado Springs, Colo., in July.

Cal Poly's Iota Pi chapter has received this award each biennium since 1999, a distinction matched only by the University of Michigan and West Virginia University.

Established in 1992, Iota Pi is made up of Cal Poly band members dedicated to promoting and aiding the band program through service, leadership and community outreach. Iota Pi has been actively involved in Cal Poly's Music Department as well as with campuswide projects and endeavors. Erin Stearns, an aerospace engineering senior, is the current chapter president.

Kappa Kappa Psi is a co-ed undergraduate organization and an honorary service fraternity established in 1919 at what is now Oklahoma State University.
