Russell Receives Edna Kimbro Award

Craig Russell and Dan KriegerCraig Russell was recently awarded the Edna Kimbro Award from the California Mission Studies Association (CMSA). It is granted annually to a distinguished scholar who has made the most substantial contribution in the study of California and its culture during the mission era. He recaeived the award primarily for his recent publication, "From Serra to Sancho: Music and Pageantry in the California Missions" (New York: Oxford University Press, 2009). The president of the CMSA presently is also a Cal Poly professor—Dan Krieger of the History Department. On Friday, February 26, the award was officially announced at the opening ceremony of the 27th Annual Conference of the CMSA that was held at Mission San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside. Krieger gave a heart-warming, glowing introduction for Russell, who accepted the society’s award and plaque and then gave the plenary lecture “From Chant to Classicism: Exploring the Musical Styles of the California Missions” before the assembled membership of the society that evening.
